Initial CPC consists of two modules, as described below.
Module 2
Module 2 is a computer based assessment. Module 2 presents 7 case studies based on real life situations that you’re likely to encounter in your day to day life working as a driver. For example one case study may examine how you would adapt to driving in icy conditions. The test is computer based and examines your ability to apply knowledge to work based driving situations. Questions may be delivered in a number of formats such as multiple choice, a requirement to click on an area of a photograph or by typing in a short answer.
Module 4
Module 4 is a practical test that demonstrates your ability to keep the vehicle safe and secure while also ensuring your own personal safety. With the use of the new training cages, you are expected to demonstrate your ability to safely secure loads to a vehicle. You may be asked to demonstrate your knowledge of when and how to use load tensioning bars, chain tensioners, ratchet unit and chains along with the use of ropes. You may be asked about various scenarios such as how you would prevent criminality, the trafficking of illegal substances and stowaways, how you would handle emergency situations and how you can minimise physical risks. You will need to demonstrate your understanding of your daily maintenance checks by carrying out a physical walk round vehicle safety check. In order to pass the candidate has to score 15 out of a possible 20 points in each topic area (75%) and an overall score of 80%.
Once you have completed your Initial CPC you will enter a five year period, over which you must complete a further five days of classroom based training known as the Periodic CPC in order to continue driving for a living.

Which Driver CPC Training do I require?
There are two types of Driver CPC Training, these are known as Periodic and Initial Driver CPC Training. Periodic training is undertaken by anyone who is considered to have acquired rights (i.e. held a 7.5 tonne class 2 or class 1 licence prior to 9th September 2009 or held a PCV licence prior to 9th September 2008) OR who has previously undertaken the Initial CPC and now requires the 35 hours (five days) Periodic Training every five years thereafter. You will also need to complete your Periodic CPC if you passed your car test before January 1997.
If you did not hold a lorry entitlement (C1, C or C + E) on your licence at 9th September 2009, and you are new to driving a vehicle above 3.5 tonne GVW you must take the Initial CPC (a two part test known as Module 2 and Module 4) as opposed to undertaking Periodic CPC training. Or if you did not hold a bus entitlement (D1, D or D+E) on your licence at 9th September 2008 you must take the Initial CPC.
If a driver holds a vocational licence for buses and coaches as well as lorries, they only need to do one set of periodic training.
